Hardening a Plesk VPS in 2026: our 20-point checklist

Every server we provision starts from the same hardened baseline. Here are the highlights.

Access

  1. Disable password SSH logins — keys only
  2. Move administrative panels behind an IP allow-list or VPN
  3. Enforce 2FA on Plesk and registrar accounts

Network

  • Enable the Plesk firewall with a default-deny policy
  • Put Cloudflare or a managed WAF in front of every public site
  • Rate-limit login and API endpoints

Applications

Run each application under its own system user, give each database a dedicated least-privilege user, and never store secrets in your repository — use environment variables.

Backups

Encrypted, off-site, daily — and tested monthly. An untested backup is a hope, not a plan.
